Screening and Assessment

The Right Start

Within the first 30 days of enrollment, every child is screened to determine their current social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. The Brigance screen is part of the Brigance screens system and is designed for children birth – 23 months old. The rationale for administering the screen is to enable a careful view of children’s growth and learning. The screen includes the recognition that development is a continuous, ever-evolving process resulting from the child’s skills and temperament, teachers’ involvement and interactions and the transactions between the two. By measuring this process, the Screen enables our teachers to monitor your child’s progress, advise you on how to promote development, and to initiate an individualized instruction and any special services needed to facilitate children’s learning and family adjustment.

The screening process includes two components:

  1. Parent – Child interaction Report Form
  2. Screening observation Form

Once the data is collected and tabulated, the data is provided to your child’s teacher and shared with you. Based on the results of the screening, your child will be placed in a classroom that is developmentally appropriate, an individualized plan will be created to promote development in areas that may have been lacking at the time and recommendations will be made based on the Screen findings and parent input.
Assessing Children’s Learning

Throughout the year our teachers are assessing your child through formal and informal means. Observing, guiding, and assessing children’s learning is an ongoing process. Our teachers collect facts, analyze and evaluate each child’s assessment, then use the information they’ve learned to plan for each child and the class as a whole.
